he Guanacaste coast provides a unique "dual fishery," allowing us to target world-class fish both near the coast and in the deep Pacific:

  • Offshore Trophies: We primarily hunt the magnificent billfish, including Pacific Sailfish, and three varieties of Marlin (Blue, Black, and Striped). We also frequently encounter large schooling fish like Yellowfin Tuna and acrobatic Dorado (Mahi-Mahi).

  • Inshore Action: Closer to the Catalinas Islands and local reefs, our main targets are the powerful Roosterfish, highly prized for their fight, along with various species of Snapper and Grouper perfect for your Post-Trip Fish Preparation.

In addition to the fish, guests often enjoy Wildlife Encounters with bottlenose dolphins, giant manta rays, and migrating humpback whales (seasonally). Check out our fill listing of Fish Species you can catch in Guanacaste, Costa Rica.

The good news is that Roosterfish are a very consistent year-round catch in the waters near Playa Potrero and the Catalinas Islands.

  • Peak Consistency: While available year-round, their activity often peaks during the transition months of the dry season (March and April) and the early months of the rainy season (May and June), when baitfish are abundant closer to shore.

  • Offshore Context: For offshore targets like Marlin and Pacific Sailfish, the peak season runs from late November through May, but quality offshore opportunities are also available throughout the "Green Season" (rainy season).

Our Expert Guidance ensures we know exactly where the fish are biting, no matter the month!

We pride ourselves on using genuine Top-Tier Equipment across all our vessels to ensure reliability and maximize your fight experience.

  • Offshore Gear: For the heavy hitters like Marlin and Sailfish, we use professional-grade conventional reels paired with high-quality rods, featuring heavy line and appropriate fighting chairs or harnesses.

  • Inshore Gear: For the intense Roosterfish and snapper action, we utilize lighter-class conventional and spinning gear, providing a more hands-on and thrilling battle.

  • What to bring: All necessary tackle, lures, fresh bait, and safety gear are provided. You just need to bring sun protection and your excitement!

At Fish Potrero, we are deeply committed to sustainable fishing and conservation, especially for our magnificent billfish population.

  • Billfish (Marlin & Sailfish): We practice 100% catch-and-release for all billfish. We prioritize the health of these trophy species and take every measure to ensure a safe and quick release, allowing them to thrive and contribute to future fishing opportunities.

  • Edible Species: For other abundant species like Tuna, Dorado (Mahi-Mahi), Snapper, and Grouper, you are welcome to keep a reasonable amount for your dinner. Our service includes Post-Trip Fish Preparation, where our crew will clean and bag your catch, or recommend a local restaurant that can prepare it for you.

  • Roosterfish: We encourage the release of all Roosterfish due to their status as a protected sportfish, though we will assist in preparing a magnificent photo opportunity with your catch.

Tides and weather are critical elements we constantly monitor to ensure both safety and the best chances of success.

  • Tides & Fish Activity: While offshore billfish activity is less impacted by tides, inshore fishing for species like Roosterfish and Snapper is often most productive during the movement of water (incoming or outgoing tide). Our Expert Guidance always factors in the tides for the day's strategy.

  • Weather & Safety: The safety of our guests is paramount. We closely monitor marine weather forecasts. In the event of unsafe weather conditions, the captain will make the final decision to reschedule the charter.

  • Detailed Reports: For the most current information, including seasonal patterns and daily reports, please visit our dedicated Guanacaste Tide & Weather Report Page.

  • Green Season (May to Early November): This season is characterized by consistent sunshine in the morning with rain showers typically occurring in the late afternoon or overnight. These conditions often lead to lush scenery and fantastic fishing.

Temperatures remain warm year-round. Our Expert Guidance and captains constantly monitor marine conditions. For the most detailed, up-to-date forecast and local tide information, please visit our Guanacaste Tide & Weather Report Page.
