Guanacaste Fishing Charter Logistics: Booking & Trip Questions

We offer Half-Day (5 hours), Three-Quarter Day (7 hours), and Full-Day (9 hours) private charter options. Pricing is structured by the specific boat you choose, as each boat has unique capacities and amenities.

  • To get accurate pricing for your group, please visit our Charters Page where you can view boat details, capacity limits, and the corresponding rates for each duration. Our rates are all-inclusive for the vessel, not per person.

All Fish Potrero private charters are designed to be hassle-free and include the common items listed across all our boats:

  • Top-Tier Equipment: High-quality rods, reels, and tackle for both offshore and inshore fishing.

  • Expert Guidance: The service of our professional, local captain and crew.

  • Comfort & Refreshments: A fully stocked cooler with water, soda, beer, and light snacks.

  • Post-Trip Fish Preparation: Our crew will clean and bag your edible catch for you to take or have prepared at a local restaurant.

  • Wildlife Encounters: An opportunity to spot varied species like humpback whales, dolphins, and sea turtles during your trip.

Booking lead time is heavily dependent on the season:

  • Peak Season (Late November to Early April): We strongly recommend booking 2 to 3 months in advance for this period. Our calendar fills up quickly during the high season due to the excellent weather and peak fishing for major species.

  • Off-Peak Season (May to Early November): We can generally accommodate later inquiries, and you may find availability booking just a few weeks or even days in advance.

Regardless of the season, we advise contacting us as soon as your travel dates are confirmed. We are always happy to check last-minute availability.

Our policy is designed to be fair while respecting our captains' schedules.

  • Standard Policy: Any client-initiated cancellations or requests to reschedule must be received at least 72 hours (3 days) prior to your scheduled charter departure time to be considered for a deposit refund.

  • Late Cancellations: Cancellations received within the 72-hour window are not accepted, and the deposit/full payment will be forfeited.

  • Boat-Specific Terms: Final payment and refund terms can vary slightly based on the specific boat and trip type booked. Please refer to your initial booking agreement for the precise terms related to your reservation.

Playa Potrero & Safety: What to Know Before You Go

We supply all the necessary fishing gear and refreshments, so you only need to bring personal comfort and protection items. We recommend the following essentials:

  • Sun Protection: High-quality sunscreen (reef-safe if possible), a wide-brimmed hat, and polarized sunglasses are mandatory on the water.

  • Clothing: Light, moisture-wicking clothing, and non-slip boat shoes (or sandals that can get wet).

  • Documentation: Your photo ID/passport copy, and confirmation of your booking.

  • Optional: A camera (to capture your Wildlife Encounters and trophy catch), and cash for customary crew gratuities.

Please Note: While this is a general list, any minor, specific variations (like towel service) are listed on each boat's dedicated page. All major Top-Tier Equipment and Comfort & Refreshments are included on every trip.

The Guanacaste region experiences two primary seasons that affect the weather:

  • Dry Season (Late November to Early April): Expect clear, sunny days with very little rain and low humidity. This is the peak travel and fishing season.

  • Green Season (May to Early November): This season is characterized by consistent sunshine in the morning with rain showers typically occurring in the late afternoon or overnight. These conditions often lead to lush scenery and fantastic fishing.

Temperatures remain warm year-round. Our Expert Guidance and captains constantly monitor marine conditions. For the most detailed, up-to-date forecast and local tide information, please visit our Guanacaste Tide & Weather Report Page.

Absolutely. The safety and security of our guests are our highest priority. Every Fish Potrero vessel is rigorously maintained and equipped with up-to-date safety and communication equipment that meets or exceeds all Costa Rican maritime regulations.

  • Safety Gear: This includes US Coast Guard-approved life vests for all passengers, life rafts (on larger vessels), flares, first-aid kits, and fire suppression systems.

  • Communication: All boats maintain reliable VHF radio contact and are equipped with GPS navigation systems. Our Expert Guidance includes a captain trained in emergency protocols.

  • Safety Standards: Before every departure, the captain performs a full safety check to ensure a worry-free day on the water.

Fish Potrero is conveniently located in the heart of the Guanacaste coast, with easy access to various amenities and accommodations:

  • Getting to Potrero: The closest and most convenient airport is Liberia International Airport (LIR), which is typically a quick 45-minute to 1-hour drive. We highly recommend arranging a private shuttle service from LIR for a stress-free transfer, though car rentals are also readily available. Though we can help provide transportation from either Liberia or San Jose to Potrero.

  • Getting Around: While you can walk to many spots in the immediate Potrero area (Surfside), renting a car or utilizing local taxis/private drivers is best for exploring nearby areas like Flamingo, Tamarindo, or Las Catalinas.

  • Accommodation: The area offers a wide range of options, from beachfront boutique hotels like Bahia del Sol to private vacation rentals and condos. Many excellent options are located right here in Playa Potrero and the surrounding areas of Playa Flamingo and Las Catalinas.
